Yes, Kumar lived in Kandy and I lived in Colombo, but we played against each other maybe once or twice when we were at school and then we hooked up when he came to Colombo and started playing club and international cricket together. That's when our friendship began to build. No, not really! School cricket and club cricket was just a lot of fun. And then when I got into the national side, Mahela was already vice-captain. We are the same age but Mahela was already playing Under-24 and A-team level when he was 17 and had been earmarked for national greatness. I think when we started playing international cricket together. We were in a team that had a lot of senior players and we were the same age and had a lot of similar interests. Yes, that's a good point, because when I first came into the Sri Lanka side there was no one who was in my age group; Kumar was probably the first person of my age to come in after I made my debut in xxxx. He came into the side in xxxx and as soon as he did we just clicked, because I needed somebody! It wasn't an intimidating dressing room, in fact it was a lot of fun, and Murali always spent a lot of time with the younger players. But it's great when you have someone who shares your interests and you have a lot of things you can do and talk about, on and off the field. We have this joke in Sri Lanka about Kandy boys being a bit wild, but Kumar was quite different. He was in his element in international cricket, in the sense that he knows what he's doing and he's very focused and hard-working. Those were the first things I thought about him. Even when he first came into the side he was quick to learn, he was really working hard on his game and asking a lot of questions from the senior guys. Those are things we learned from each other as we tried to develop our game. Both of us helped each other quite a bit in that environment. When I came into the national side Mahela had already scored hundreds and a double-hundred - 240 against India - and been the vice-captain, so he was my age but at the same time he was established and one of the best performers. It used to frustrate me watching him bat, because he never had to work hard like most of us; he had a lot of natural ability, grace and timing. He had the ability to score a lot of big runs at a young age, whereas I took about two years to get my first hundred in Test cricket. So there were a lot of things I learnt off Mahela: how he handled the dressing room, how he handled the seniors, the way he carried himself. It was great to be able to chit-chat about that and then to cement the friendship by spending a lot of time together. The best memories are our travelling adventures. Every time we go on tour we tend to feed off each other and both of us just love the game of cricket, so we would ask questions of others and then just keep talking about how we could improve. It's about enjoying the countries that we are in. We love to try out food, see the culture? have a good time basically. It's not easy when you're travelling and playing the game for 15 years or more, and you need that friendship to carry you through. You tend to make mistakes on the field and off the field sometimes and you need somebody to talk to and get their views to get it right. We've enjoyed that brilliantly. But we've also had our banter? we're very competitive on and off the field! It makes enjoying the dressing room a lot easier when things get tough, when there are things you can't control, that you have someone there who you can sit down with and have a laugh about it with. Especially when we play our warm-up games, our football matches and various silly things. We were just having a good time, talking about a lot of things, including what we would be eating for dinner, I think! The only time tension set in was when we got close to the world record. We were only aware of it for the last bit. Yes, I think we had a tea break just before we reached the record and when we went back to the dressing room we had no idea how close we were. We knew that Sanath [Jayasuriya] and Roshan [Mahanama] held the record, but we weren't sure how close we were to it until the tea break when someone said we were ten or 11 runs away from breaking the record. I was particularly nervous, because it's not an individual thing and you can't let your partner down. Those last few runs were very tense! It's nice that two good friends hold that record. I don't think we ever set out to break it, it just happened. Sangakkara began shakily, as he was put down in the gully and bowled by a no ball. From then on there was no let-up though; he and his partner, Jayawardene, each reaching his half-century before stumps on day one and batting through the entirety of the second day to bring up their double tons. That evening, with history beckoning, the friends tried to relax and took their wives out to dinner at a local Thai restaurant. Then, on day three, they ploughed on, first passing Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama's record of 576 for the highest Test partnership and then Vijay Hazare and Gul Mohamed's first-class record of 577. Each landmark was greeted with an impromptu blast of fireworks.Sanga eventually fell for 287, after 675 minutes at the crease, but his partner continued to churn out the runs, eclipsing Jayasuriya's innings of 340, the highest by a Sri Lankan, before finally falling 26 runs short of Brian Lara's Test record 400 to the dismay of the home fans. In 752 minutes at the crease, Jayawardene had faced 572 balls and hit 43 fours and one six. He declared immediately after his dismissal, giving Murali enough time to bowl out South Africa for an innings victory. I think the match situation dictated the partnership purely because when we went in we were in trouble so we were not actually thinking about a big partnership, we were just trying to get through that period against a good South African bowling attack. We were about 14 for 2 when I joined Kumar and we were just trying to bat through long periods, we never had a thought of a big partnership like that. But I think that's how these things happen - you don't really think about it. And Kumar was meant to be the best man at my wedding but he wasn't in the country! The wedding was fixed for a date but then a tour got rescheduled and got tangled up in the week of my wedding. I had to fly back from India for my wedding and none of my team-mates could be there. It was a real shame. I was in India playing a one-day series. Mahela had to skip back to Sri Lanka for a couple of days.Yes, we've had our tough times. We've had tough times when we've lost four World Cup finals, we've had tough times when we've lost overseas, and we've had tough times in Sri Lanka. But we've stuck together and we've helped each other out in those situations. We've had conversations about how to get through those tough times. It makes a big difference having Kumar there. It's not about saying "yes" to everything, it's about asking each other questions about why we're doing something and asking if we can maybe do something differently. Having a different opinion can help each other. Playing in Sri Lanka is not always the easiest, with lots of things happening, so often you need that bit of advice. I think that's any player's responsibility really, to leave cricket a better place and to leave the dressing room an easier place to come through; to set foundations and guide with advice. But at the end of the day I think our responsibility is very simple: to play Test cricket to the best of our ability so we can inspire young players to reach those standards. Mahela has got close to 11,000 Test runs, over 11,000 one-day runs, over 30 hundreds. What better way to inspire the next generation than to do what he's done? To play the game in such a manner, to win games for Sri Lanka, to leave that legacy. There have been a lot of foundations laid by a lot of Sri Lankan cricketers over the years and our challenge was to take Sri Lankan cricket forward from where it was. We are a tiny island and what we've accomplished is amazing and we're passionate about our game and very proud we're playing for our country. We want to see new players coming through, breaking our records and going further forward, because that means we'll have done a good job in giving them a pathway. Most of the things we've started are together, in charity work and other business ventures, so we'll definitely be partners for quite some time I think! It's been fun and it's a fantastic friendship we have on and off the field. It's not overshadowing each other. It's a very healthy partnership; we feed off each other and we complement each other. I had the privilege of flying with Mahela from Colombo to Chennai. It was immediately after the World Cup final. He had taken a break and was coming back to Chennai for the IPL inauguration. He was absolutely down to earth, polite and very friendly. He patiently signed autographs and posed for photos while waiting for the baggage to arrive. When I told him that my son would be thrilled if I told him I had travelled with Mahela, he immediatley suggested that I can call up my son so that he can talk to him. That was Mahela Jayawardane. Stylish on the field and a gentleman off it. I guess one other cricketer like him is Sachin. Real champions! Mahela was a child prodigy - I remember even when he was playing Under15s he was ear-marked to be a Sri Lankan Cricket legend and Captain.. On the other hand Kumar had a different root to success - where he is more focused, hard working and intelligent- which helped him end up being slightly the better player over the years. Kumar surely has improved alot after joining the national side. However Mahela will always be the Sri Lankan favourite as he gave us that extra reason to believe on his natural talent. He has made us dissapointed over the years - specially in ODI cricket, but we love him for his pure talent, elegance, technique, Captaincy, great ODI innings and his superb record in Tests - and more than all we feel Mahela is one of us (Ape Kollek) and we looked upto him over the years (even before he joined the national side) and we lived with him in both his success and dissapointments... Both Kumar and Mahela are legends of the game - and legends of Sri Lanka - we are very proud. I had the privilege of meeting most of the Sri Lankan cricket team when they toured England in xxxx. I met them at their hotel after the match in Bristol. I had a brief chat with both Kumar and Mahela. They were extremely polite and welcoming. Many sports personalities can be quite intimidating and unsociable. Both are excellent ambassadors to Sri Lankan cricket and cricket as a whole. Personality-wise and they way they carry themselves on and off the field, they are definitely a class apart. Cricket and sport desperately need people like them. Even as a South African supporter, I will be cheering them on in xxxx to hopefully finally win a deserved World Cup! N. Sundararajan from Chennai--I have not met Mahela but I have met Kumar at the Colombo airport lounge, and have obtained his autograph for my daughter ! Both are such fine gentlemen, and play the game in the traditional spirit. Kumar's Colin Cowdrey speech was a gem ! May God bless them both with long life, long cricketing career and of course success in their ventures ! Both Mahela and Sangakkara have been outstanding for Sri Lankan cricket. They have led their team to many wins and have been pretty much the backbone of their team for the last decade. Sanga has done well around the world and is his team's first genuine world class batsman. Jayawardene has scored piles and piles of runs at home and is a very important factor for SL's dominance at home. These two have given a lot to their team and their contributions are invaluable. Sri Lanka will be lucky to find two more batsmen like them in the future. I hope they keep going on till the xxxx WC and try to win a tournament at last! Legends of course !! Two outstanding talents !! Mahela looked a natural always often finding enough time to play a shot and many time was able to play innovative shots.. Sanga is highly focussed, really hardworking and having tremendous temparement to suit all forms of cricket.. plays with ease and assurance,.. capable of holding an innings with determination...both are brilliant..!! No noise just pure showmanship and dedication. What amazing characters these two are. True ambassadors of the game. As sledging rows dominated the Ashes narrative in the days after the first Test, the cricketer least likely to figure in the debate was.Wry but shy, crafty but quiet, Lyon's art is not that of the fast bowling bruiser or verbal enforcer. It is instead a game of subtlety, sleight of hand and hidden danger: batsmen lured to their doom rather than lashed to it. By his own smiling admission, Lyon is the quiet one. "I can't really bounce anyone out," he said this week. "Can I?" Yet beneath the mild exterior, Lyon has been toughened appreciably by the experiences of the past year. Over that period he has learned the value of assertiveness and even outspokenness, of standing up for himself and his bowling, and making his own case for the best way he can flourish as a spinner in an Australian system largely besotted with pace. The path by which he has reached self-determination has been difficult, and has at times seemed unfair. How close Australia came to abandoning their long-term investment in Lyon can only be guessed at, but the fact he was twice dropped on flimsy grounds suggested it was a possibility the selectors had weighed up. Flirtations with have only strengthened the notion. For a time Lyon was committed to doing whatever was asked of him, earning the admiration of his team-mates for selflessness and commitment to the collective cause.so admired these qualities, he bequeathed Lyon the job as team songmaster, "Under the Southern Cross" his anthem. But before he could belt out that four-line chorus in Brisbane, he had to find another voice - one that allowed him to bowl on his terms. Those terms were very evident on Lyon's in September xxxx, when he twirled his way through Sri Lanka with Galle's venerable Dutch fort in the background. Kumar Sangakkara had seemed an equally permanent presence when Lyon sauntered in for ball No. 1, but he would be memorably confounded by all the qualities that had seen Lyon shoot up from his dual roles as Canberra Comets spinner and Adelaide Oval groundsman in a matter of months.Blessed with an easy, classical action forged in his youth, Lyon imparts considerable revolutions, comparable to those of Graeme Swann. But he can also alter the axis on which the ball rotates, to create greater overspin or side spin depending on what the pitch and batsman demand. Spinning the ball up before letting it loop, drift and drop, he coerced Sangakkara into an exploratory forward defensive, then found the left-hander's edge with sharp turn on a tinder-dry surface. In the space of a ball, Lyon had the blueprint for a career that may eventually become the most prolific by an Australian offspinner.
